The articles appearing under "Milestones in Physics" will give an insight into special events or situations that have been decisive for the evolution of Physics.
Our first contribution goes back to the year 1964, when theoretical foundations for Particle Physics were established, which now after almost 5 decades were verified by an unprecedented master effort in experimental physics. One of the protagonists of those early years is Professor Gerald S. Guralnik, who will give in the following text a first-hand account to the emergence of the theoretical framework.
